ABOUT RAFFAEL LUCA SCHUMANN
I build and study rewritten genomes.As a PhD researcher at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology and the University of Cambridge, I explore how the genetic code can be redesigned to create new biological systems and safer, more flexible biotechnologies. My work bridges molecular biology, genomics, and computation: from designing large-scale recoded genomes to developing analytical tools that reveal how cells adapt to new codes.Trained in Mathematics (BSc) and Biomedical Engineering/Bioengineering (MSc) at ETH Zurich and a year at Harvard, I bring a mix of analytical rigor and creative curiosity to questions of how life can be engineered and understood. I’m fascinated by how we can expand biology’s capabilities while keeping control, safety, and responsible design at the core.Beyond the lab, I’m interested in how advances in synthetic genomics intersect with biosecurity and policy: how we govern emerging technologies and design systems that are both innovative and safe by default.I enjoy working where science meets ideas, whether in research, biotech, or strategy, connecting detailed experiments to the bigger picture of how technology shapes the living world.Keywords: synthetic genomics · synthetic biology · genome engineering · microbiome · biosecurity · biotechnology strategy · data-driven biology · science policy · systems thinking
