ABOUT RAFAT HIRMIZ

I am an industrial energy and CO2 expert, with extensive knowledge in heat transfer and thermodynamics. I have over 6 years of experience and a successful track record in a wide range of projects, with a focus on overall mass, energy, and CO2 balances. I have been involved in several projects supporting the decarbonization strategy for industry, which includes burner design, hydrogen combustion, modelling and predicting fuel flows, steam requirements, internal power generation, and overall plant carbon emissions. I have also worked on projects on thermal energy storage for steam generation, waste heat recovery, district energy systems, heat pump projects, mapping heat sources and sinks, and performing heat-to-power and heat-to-heat feasibility studies. I have extensive experience in researching emerging technologies to reach Net-Zero including hydrogen, CCUS, bioenergy, district energy systems, and waste heat recovery. Energy projects specific to integrated steel mills included forecasting the overall plant natural gas demand as it transitions away from coal-based to natural gas-based ironmaking. This substantially reduces carbon emissions while also significantly changing the overall energy balance of the plant. I also worked on the overall steam supply, demand, and management including power generation from steam-driven turbines, and optimizing by-product fuel usage (Coke Oven Gas and Blast Furnace Gas) within the plant. I was also heavily involved in the research and feasibility analysis of future technologies to reach Net-Zero steelmaking.
