ABOUT RAFAEL SOUSA MARTINS
Passionate about innovation and new technologies, I hold a double degree in Electrical Engineering from UNICAMP (Brazil) and in Generalist Engineering from Ecole Centrale Marseille (France). In addition to a substantial background in various electrical engineering fields such as electronics, control systems, telecommunications, and electric power systems, I also received advanced training in mathematical modeling of complex systems.I began my professional journey with a research internship at ONERA – The French Aerospace Lab, focused on modeling, simulating, and testing a high-voltage nanosecond pulse generator. This experience inspired me to pursue a doctorate within the same organization. My PhD thesis is devoted to the experimental and theoretical characterization of lightning arcs and their direct effects on aeronautical materials, including aluminum and carbon fiber composites. During my thesis, I gained extensive expertise in plasma physics, electric arcs, and the development of applied models, particularly in radiative transfer and shock wave mechanics.Following a brief postdoctoral research at CentraleSupélec, where I specialized in modeling and characterizing thermal fluxes at the interface of aeronautical materials during lightning strikes, I am currently serving as a research scientist at ONERA. Currently, I contribute to broader projects related to lightning strikes on aircraft and their direct effects. These activities include the development of experimental tests, conducting high-precision measurements, employing cutting-edge diagnostics, and designing on-board sensors for atmosphere characterization.
