As an evenings-and-weekends project, I have gotten back into doing game development. Currently, Rooibot\'s a mostly-solo endeavor; I am handling game design, system design, all the development, generating art and placeholder assets, etc. Needless to say, the game in question is a very long way off, as it always had to take a back seat to the day job. However, while the game itself is a good ways off, the development process has already resulted in a number of useful Unreal Engine 5 tools and plugins. These include:• Creation of a framework, GMCExtended, which sits atop the excellent General Movement Component to add further functionality: motion warping support, modular movement solvers, and so on.• Participating as a primary contributor to the GMC Ability System (a.k.a. GMAS), which provides an equivalent to Epic\'s own Gameplay Ability System (GAS) built atop the GMC\'s network replication and rollback/replay functionality.• Creation of an older and now-deprecated metadata generator for bulk processing of animation sequences to generate animation curve tracks from root motion, as well as rewriting bone positions to correct import and animation retargeting issues.• Creation of a replacement for the above, a more-extensible general animation processing toolkit to use within the Unreal Engine editor environment. This toolkit - the Animation Metadata, Modifier, and Import Toolkit (a.k.a. AMMIT)- is in the early stages but already usable. All of the above tools have been released as open source and shared with the community, and are available on the Rooibot github page. From June 2024 through October 2024, I was also doing \"hired-gun\" contract work on other people\'s games, predominantly focused on cleaning up network code and movement logic.
