ABOUT RACHEL KOHUT

I am a Canadian Foreign Service Officer, cross-trained in law, public health, and international relations. I currently serve as a desk officer for the United Nations Division, within the International Organizations and Human Rights Bureau.Prior to joining Global Affairs Canada, I was called to the Law Society of Ontario (2022), after completing my articles with Amnesty International Canada thanks to the Law Foundation of Ontario\'s Public Interest Articling Fellowship. A non-exhaustive list of other previous roles include: directing the National Association of Women and the Law\'s feminist law reform advocacy project; interning with the Center for Reproductive Right\'s Global Legal Program in New York City, where I co-edited and co-researched a report on the impact of the Zika virus on women living in Colombia, Brazil and El Salvador, in collaboration with Harvard\'s Women\'s Health Initiative and Yale\'s Global Health Justice Partnership; working with the HIV Legal Network in Toronto, where I worked on HIV in prisons and Russian drug policy; and interning with the UNDP\'s HIV, Health and Development Team in Istanbul, where I worked on access to medicines, intellectual property and LBGTI rights in Central Europe and Eurasia.I feel incredibly privileged to have also worked and lived in the Arctic, including: temporarily stepping in to manage Nunavut\'s sexual health portfolio out of Pangnirtung; supporting Inuit-led COVID, Tuberculosis and on-the-land addictions treatment programming in Kangiqtugaapik (Clyde River), including projects in collaboration with the SeeChange Initiative and Médecins Sans Frontières; co-researching a report on the Nunavut Human Rights Act and the Nunavut Human Rights Tribunal with the Amautiit Nunavut Inuit Women’s Association; and coordinating projects for the Law Society of Nunavut on issues such as access to justice, the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), family violence and sexual harassment.
