Two decades in the trenches showed me how badly we’re screwing it up.I’ve watched this critical role get diluted into an administrative catch-all. That ends now.As AI reshapes every workplace, the Chief of Staff will become the most essential executive outside the CEO. Why? Because AI optimizes for metrics. Chiefs of Staff optimize for humans.**My mission is threefold:**First, we need to stop treating “Chief of Staff” like a dumping ground title. The role has specific, strategic requirements—not soft skills and note-taking. When we dilute the definition, we set people up to fail.Second, the collision between AI and workplace culture will make Chiefs of Staff indispensable. Someone — a senior executive — has to orchestrate people, understand what motivates them, and ensure organizations remain functional places to work. That’s not happening through algorithms.Third (and this is where it gets interesting) women are overwhelmingly Chiefs of Staff. If we define and leverage this role properly, we can finally diversify C-suites and reshape workplace culture from the inside.
