ABOUT JOHN MCDERMOTT
John began his career in emergency services in January of with the Lesser Slave Regional Fire Service. Among other things, he’s been educated, trained and certified as a Professional Firefighter, HAZMAT Operator, Fire Service Instructor and Fire Investigator. John has extensive experience in fire service administration, operational firefighting, command, formal instruction and fire origin & cause investigations including case management, interviewing and evidence collection. In 2013, he became certified by the International Association of Arson Investigators as a Fire Investigation Technician (IAAI-FIT) as well as becoming certified as a Canadian Certified Fire Investigator-B (CCFI-B) in 2022. He is also FI-210 trained as a Wildfire Investigator with experience in scene processing and documentation. John also sits as on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Association of Fire Investigators (CAFI) as a Regional Director for Alberta. John serves the FIAA, Chapter #38 of the IAAI as a Past President. In addition to sitting on the Board of Directors of the FIAA since 2010, he’s also served the IAAI as the Chapter Liaison for all Canadian Chapters (B.C, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec) in addition to being a member of the IAAI Membership Committee. Previous to this, he sat on the IAAI Training and Education Committee and was the Co-Chair of the IAAI International Training Conference from 20••••21. In 2017, John was published in Jones and Bartlett Learning,\"Fire Investigator: Principals and Practices of NFPA 921 and 1033, Fifth Edition\". He also hosts Flame Front Radio with John McDermott - a podcast for for fire, arson, explosion and wildfire investigators where he and guests discuss topics as they relate to the fire, arson and explosion investigation community. John serves the residents of the Nunavut Territory with the Nunavut Fire Marshal’s Office.
