ABOUT KAREN ANTHONY
Senior leader, scientific researcher, and educator with 20 years’ experience in RNA processing and RNA-based therapeutics, including exon skipping and RNA trans-splicing. I have worked across academic and pharmaceutical sectors on neurological and neuromuscular disease targets, including ataxin-1, dystrophin, tau, and TDP-43, with a focus on rare neurodegenerative and neuromuscular disorders.Working with Professor Francesco Muntoni at University College London (UCL), my pioneering and ongoing gene therapy work centres on Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and the spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs). I played a key role in the clinical development of Exondys 51 (eteplirsen), the first FDA-approved antisense oligonucleotide therapy for DMD, and developed validated, standardised protocols for accurate quantification of dystrophin mRNA and protein in human tissue.Currently, I lead the proof-of-concept and preclinical development of innovative RNA trans-splicing strategies for rare diseases. I am also the founding Academic Director of the Northampton Advanced Imaging Facility, supporting advanced microscopy and image analysis in life sciences and digital technologies.Alongside my research, I advise international pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies on clinical trial methodology and biochemical outcome measures, provide expert witness and consultancy services, and serve as a panel member for national bodies on research culture and environment.
