About Rob Murphy

Twenty years building teams and solving hard problems across public health infrastructure, distributed databases, and applied AI.The thread has been consistent: complex systems, real constraints, and the need to see around the corner.Early career at the CDC building HPC clusters for genomic analysis and outbreak response systems. Then a decade leading global technical field organizations for distributed database vendors, where the work included building targeting models, bringing new products to beta customers, and scaling teams. Two and a half years ago, a generative AI inflection point turned long-standing research interests into focus. That shift led to original published research on prompt optimization, retrieval architecture, and agent communication. It also led to becoming the primary AI voice for my company in the Americas: keynotes, customer design sessions, prototypes, and the kind of customer work that surfaces the real problems in AI at enterprise scale. The research comes from seeing what breaks. The leadership comes from understanding that behind every technical decision are real people with real constraints. Start with the problem, not the product.MS in Predictive Analytics (AI, ML, Graph Databases) from Northwestern. Thesis on adversarial modeling for synthetic identity fraud detection using graph theory and neural networks.

Experience

  1. Senior Director, Solution Engineering - Americas

    Couchbase

    Feb 2023 — Present · US

Lead six Solution Engineering teams across the Americas. Recognized the generative AI inflection early and began pulling the global field team in, building sample applications, demos, and technical talks. That effort accelerated as the market caught up, and I became the company’s primary AI voice in the Americas: keynotes, customer AI design sessions, prototypes, and shared repositories. The customer work surfaced real problems in retrieval and memory at scale, which led directly to published research on prompt optimization (genetic algorithms), retrieval architecture (RecursiveRAG), and agent communication (SMTP transport for cross-org agents).Named Americas MVP and Presidents Club in 2024.
