ABOUT ANDREA HUNT

I am a Professor of Sociology and the Executive Director of the Mitchell-West Center for Social Inclusion and the Center for Women’s Studies at the University of North Alabama. In this role, I support education, research, community, and advocacy by working with diverse groups on campus, in the community, and across the state and region. I work in partnership with existing campus offices and programs to continue to foster an environment committed to social engagement, empowerment, equity, and justice. My work is focused on developing initiatives that could reduce inequalities experienced on campus and within the community and state. My teaching, research, and community work cover a diverse range of topics including trauma, identity, inequality, experiences of first-generation students, gender bias in instructor evaluations, the role of academic advising in student retention, mentoring, effective online pedagogy, and learning experiences that promote information and media literacy. I have facilitated numerous workshops on creating more inclusive campus environments, academic advising for diverse student populations, preparing high school students for college, best practices for online learning, and techniques for teaching about social inequality. In the community, I am a court appointed special advocate, a violence prevention educator, and work with youth who are in contact with juvenile/family court. I am a partner in Hunt-Cain Consulting. Our focus is on education, civic, and corporate sectors and providing our clients with the supports and strategies they need to create equitable practices.
