As Head of the Centre for Advancing Practice at NHS England, I lead the national strategy to develop and embed advanced practice roles across the health and care system. My work focuses on ensuring that advanced practitioners are recognised, supported, and deployed effectively to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.I oversee the design and implementation of standards, governance frameworks, and equivalence recognition processes that underpin advancing practice. This includes shaping policy, driving workforce transformation, and collaborating with stakeholders across education, regulation, and service delivery to build a sustainable and skilled advanced practice workforce.Key priorities include- Setting national standards for advanced practice education and training- Developing equivalence systems to assure capabilities and quality- Supporting employers and systems to integrate advanced practice roles strategically- Promoting innovation and evidence-based practice to improve patient outcomes.Through this work, I aim to strengthen clinical leadership, develop career pathways, and ensure advanced practitioners contribute to addressing workforce challenges and improving access to care and optimise experiences and outcomes for patients, carers, and families.

ABOUT JULIAN BARRATT
I am a national expert on multi-professional advancing practice, and a senior nursing academic leader. Over 30 years my career has focused on advancing practice developments in healthcare, education, workforce transformation, policy, regulation, and research. After qualifying as a Registered Nurse in 1991, I worked in emergency nursing for seven years, becoming a Charge Nurse at St George’s Hospital, South London. I then spent 14 years in primary care, holding advanced practice roles as a Nurse Practitioner in unscheduled care and general practice across London and Shropshire. During this time, I became a Nurse Independent Prescriber.In 2003, I transitioned into post-registration nursing education as a clinical academic Nurse Practitioner/Senior Lecturer in Advanced Nursing at London South Bank University (LSBU). In 2011, I joined the University of Wolverhampton (WLV) as a Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing, gaining experience in pre-registration education, alongside continued engagement in post-registration advanced practice developments, such as prescribing education and training.Between 2017 to 2018, I was seconded to the Head of Academic Business and Workforce Development post, leading CPD and enterprise initiatives for nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, and pharmacists within the Institute of Health at WLV. In June 2018, I was appointed Principal Lecturer/Head of Community Nursing at WLV, later becoming Head of the Post-Registration Education Department. I led the multi-professional advanced practice and CPD teams, while enhancing the Institute’s research profile in line with faculty priorities.In 2020, I was appointed as the Midlands Regional Faculty Lead for Advancing Practice at Health Education England. This role focused on driving consistency and innovation in advanced practice across healthcare providers. In 2024, I became Head of the Centre for Advancing Practice at NHS England, overseeing advancing practice education and training quality assurance, equivalence recognition, and policy development.I completed my PhD in 2016 at LSBU, exploring communication processes and their impact on patient-reported outcomes in advanced nurse practitioner consultations in general practice. I also supervise and examine research students completing masters dissertations and doctoral theses. In 2023 I was appointed as an Honorary Professor for the nursing programmes offered by Aston Medical School at Aston University, Birmingham, in recognition of my contribution to nursing education and advanced practice developments and innovations.
