About Smitha Hegde
Petridophytes are vascular cryptogams and form neglected group in biodiversity studies. It forms a conspicuous element of vegetation all over the surface of earth. India is one among the twelve mega centers. Eastern Himalayas and Western Ghats are two hotspots for ferns in India. My team is exploring the biodiversity of these ferns in the Western Ghat region especially the belts of Kudremukh National Park, regions of Dakshinna Kannada and Udupi District. The study was partly funded by the Karnataka Forest Department, Govt. of Karnataka. Successfully completed major research grant from DAE-BRNS for studying phytoremediation prospects of ferns specifically for heavy and radioactive metals. My team is focused on exploring the possibility of using ferns for Phytoremediation. We are bioprospecting ferns of the region for the accumulation of heavy and toxic radioactive metals. My expertise is in Fern Tissue culture studies for large scale propagation and developmental pattern studies. We have also undertaken phytochemical analysis for ferns with medicinal properties. Presently I am pursuing DNA barcoding for ferns to document and record their rich biodiversity in this region.
