About Pritam Mukherjee
My area of research over the past 10 years centred on several topics including Meiotic Chromosome Dynamics in Budding Yeast; Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria & Bacterial Exopolysaccharide (EPS); Roles of EPS in Bacterial Osmoregulation, Heavy Metal Bioremediation & Growth Promotion of Oryza sativa; Aquaculture & Probiotics; Use of Coliform Bacteria in River/Estuarine Water & Aquaculture as Bio-indicator of Environmental Health - with \'microbes\' being the common thread among all- My expertise includes (but is not limited to) Surface Chromosome Spreads & Whole-Cell Immunofluorescence, Fluorescence Microscopy, Polymerase Chain Reaction (Conventional, Gradient, Nested, etc.), Gel Electrophoresis (DNA/Protein), Western Blotting, Co-Immunoprecipitation, Yeast Two-Hybrid, Molecular Cloning, Gene Manipulations in Bacteria & Yeast, Protein, EPS & Antibody Purification, Spectroscopy (UV-Vis, AAS), Flame Photometry, Aseptic Pure Cell Culture (Microbiological) Techniques- My present career objective is to aspire in the field of ‘Research & Development’ where my knowledge and expertise on Microbiology, Microbial Genetics, Immunology, Biotechnology, Molecular and Cell Biology from my Graduate/Post-graduate, Doctoral and Postdoctoral Research studies could be extrapolated for novel innovations in disease therapeutics that will benefit and sustain humanity around the globe.
Experience
Research Scientist (Department of Oceanography)
Feb 2020 — Present · Kolkata, IN
Currently, I am investigating the role of secreted bacterial extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) in osmoregulation of Planomicrobium halo-rhizobacteria isolated from Avicennia marina rhizosphere soil of hypersaline central Indian Sundarbans (in Dr. Abhijit Mitra\'s lab)- In another project, I am working on time-series analysis of coliform bacterial load (including total coliform, fecal coliform and E. coli) both in water (i.e, Hooghly River/estuary) and aquatic fauna (e.g, mud crabs, Scylla serrata from aquaculture farms) as indicator organisms to assess the degree of water contamination and associated risks involved to human health- Methods/techniques used include a) Multiple tube fermentation technique, analysis of hydrological parameters (temperature, DO, pH, TDS, salinity etc.), total bacterial count; b) PCR, spectroscopy (UV-Vis, FT-IR), flame photometry, turbidimetry, microscopy (phase-contrast, SEM, AFM), EPS extraction & purification, biochemical and biofilm assays- Providing assistance in guiding new PhD candidates and in formulating their course work materials as well as evaluating their exams
