ABOUT PRISCILLA BUSTAMANTE
I am a critical social psychologist, mixed methods researcher, and interdisciplinary educator. Using community-based and participatory action research to aid collective activism, I seek to not only attend to societal harm, but explore and inspire pathways forward in spite of it. My commitments are rooted in advancing reimagined forms of justice, co-creating the material conditions needed for deep healing, and embodying transformative ways of being to build movements for liberation. I have conducted collaborative research in partnership with community organizers, activists, lawyers, students, and those most directly impacted by intersecting systems of oppression. My research bridges macro, meso, and micro analyses to most broadly examine the policing of race, class, gender, and sexuality; the critical psychology of oppression, resistance, and privilege; and the cumulative impacts of state-sanctioned dehumanization. My peer-reviewed articles and policy reports have informed state and citywide advocacy campaigns, have received national and local media coverage, and have been cited by researchers spanning sixteen countries and five continents. I have also been awarded over twenty-five grants and research awards, including two national fellowships supporting my work on police sexual violence. As a born and raised New Yorker, I deeply value the diverse beauty of the human experience, and continue to learn immensely from the communities I support.
