About Khalid Oluewu
I have a relentless drive to provide urban students from various backgrounds a rich and rewarding educational experience. Consequently, I operate under the educational philosophy that “all students will learn.” I employed this resolve as a teacher, teacher leader, and it continues to govern my actions as a school leader managing adults. I believe the almost cliche espousal expressed by an overwhelming amount of educators-“all students can learn” is too passive. While I share this same belief, this statement lacks the attitudinal urgency needed by educators if we are to close the achievement gap. The former resolve presents a call for action to educators to shift their mindsets by placing the ultimate responsibility of student learning and achievement on their shoulders. There are an endless list of excuses or “reasons” (poverty stricken neighborhood, lack of parent involvement, lack of student motivation, lack of funding, demographics, and so on….) that are widely deemed and accepted as barriers to student achievement. However, the “will learn” philosopher acknowledges these obstacles and embarks on a mission to provide an excellent education for all students in spite of these adversities. In order to accomplish this huge but surmountable feat, I believe that an effective learning experience must encompass more than just academics. The need to incorporate and support students’ social and communication skills, social and emotional growth, athletic development and extra-curricular activities, along with other opportunities for students to experience learning in a broader context into the culture of the school is critical. Students must not only have exposure to, but they must be provided with multiple opportunities to engage in diverse experiences in an effort to develop the whole child. To operationalize this mission, safety is foremost and paramount.
