About Preston Lewis
History:I grew up in Overland Park, Kansas, and went to Blue Valley High School. I continued the family tradition of attending Oklahoma State University. As a freshman business student at OSU, I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do with my life. By the end of my first accounting class, I decided to pursue accounting. As it turns out, accounting runs in my family, starting with my grandfather becoming a CPA in 1960, and my dad and uncle also becoming CPAs. In addition to my passion for accounting, I know the business world is constantly evolving with new technologies. That is why I minored in MIS in my undergraduate program and obtained a graduate certificate in business data mining. I have already seen tremendous overlap between accounting and data science; I believe that is because both fields have the objective of telling a story with numbers. After graduating, I had the opportunity of working at the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) as a postgraduate technical assistant (PTA) where I was highly involved in the standard-setting process. This role paved the way for my career in professional services. I now work at Deloitte, where I serve clients in financial due diligence, leveraging my expertise in accounting, financial reporting, and transaction services.Setting Goals and Making a Plan:When I was in 7th grade, I had a conversation with my doctor about my health—particularly my weight. Before 7th grade, I had never really felt the need to set goals or better myself. But after that doctor’s appointment, I decided it was time to do something. I set out to lose 30 lbs and improve my overall health. My doctor talked to me about how I needed a simple and effective plan in order to be successful, so I did a ton of research and spent hours making a plan to accomplish my goals. Going into my 8th-grade year I was down 40lbs and was on the football, basketball, and track teams. Since then I have been able to identify the goals that are important to me and make a plan to accomplish them. This lesson has allowed me to do much more than I ever thought I would achieve—things like holding numerous leadership positions throughout high school and college, going through a difficult degree program, and maintaining a competitive GPA. These things led me to become a Spears School of Business Outstanding Senior and to be selected for the FASB PTA program. Health and fitness are still a huge part of my life thanks to my doctor from middle school who taught me that sustainable improvement is more valuable than quick changes.
