I have worked within the ICT (Information & Communications Technology) industry for over 32 years. My career began in the mid-1980’s, in the then-nascent Information Systems industry, as a trainee Mainframe Computer Operator. Since then I have worked in numerous disciplines and held a variety of roles with increasing responsibilities and positions, nationally and internationally. My role at Axicor?The culmination of those positions and experiences lead to my current role as Co-founder and CEO of Axicor. Co-founding this boot-strapped technology start-up has been akin to undertaking a real-time/practical Master of Business Administration (MBA). More about my Journey:Even with 25 years of ICT experience behind me at the time of starting the business, none of it actually prepared me for the brutal reality of co-founding a bootstrapped technology start-up. Chief amongst my reasons for making that statement are:(1) carrying the weight of responsibility for the livelihoods of our employees and(2) as an employee myself, for the better part of one quarter of a century, I had the safety net of a regular salary. A bootstrapped start-up has neither a safety net nor the guarantee of anything regular, least of all a salary. With many mistakes made, and many lessons learnt, this bootstrapped start-up survived its “baptism of fire” and is now 7 years young and continuing to grow.
