ABOUT POONAM JOSAN

I am a Human Systems Engineer and recent Ph.D. graduate in Aerospace Engineering specializing in human-automation interaction for spaceflight operations. My research and applied experience focus on enabling Earth-independent operations for long-duration exploration missions. I design and evaluate intelligent decision-support systems that help crews diagnose and resolve spacecraft anomalies under conditions of communication latency, high workload, and operational uncertainty.Through multiple roles at NASA Johnson Space Center, including contributions within EVA & Human Surface Mobility (EHP), Medical Operations, and Human Research Program–funded efforts, I have led human-in-the-loop testing, analog mission support, and operational integration activities. My doctoral work centered on Daphne-AT, an AI-enabled virtual assistant designed to support autonomous anomaly response. I developed and evaluated anomaly scenarios, experimental protocols, workload and situation awareness metrics, and system interfaces to assess crew performance, trust, and safety outcomes.My work sits at the intersection of:• Human Systems Integration (HSI)• Mission Operations & Operational Testing• EVA & Surface Mobility Systems• Human-AI Collaboration• Exploration AutonomyI am particularly motivated by translating rigorous human performance research into flight-ready systems — ensuring that hardware, software, procedures, and crews operate as an integrated whole.
