About Pablo Jadzinsky
I’m interested in how information is represented and processed both in our brains and in computers.I’m currently studying how visual information is represented in the retina (the first neural layer of the visual system) and what computations it performs. One big aspect of my work is to understand how biological systems balance conflicting constrains like energy efficiency on one side and the need to encode relevant information on the other and how those can be combined into an efficiency argument. I have just submitted an article to Neuron showing how this works in the retina.I’m also interested in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The big difference being that ML is about automating tasks and AI is about well. making an intelligent system. To me an intelligent system does not mean automating a task but a system that can ask and answer \"Now that I have automated or answer XYZ, what would be the next problem to solve?\". Contrary to the major trend in machine learning, I\'m interested in biologically inspired models. So far we only know about one true AI system (our brain), so shouldn\'t we be trying to replicate it first? Right now, this means mostly convolutional neural networks (CNNs) where the units in the model try to match real neurons and real brain circuits. This imposes big constraints in defining the architecture.
