About Pilar McDonald

I graduated from Brown University with honors in a major I designed myself: Caregiving and Care Infrastructure in the US. I wrote a senior thesis on the Wages for Housework Movement and looked at current efforts aiming to compensate and value unpaid care labor. In addition to my academic background with regard to caregiving, I took a year off from Brown, where I co-founded and co-directed an organization called Project Matriarchs. In September 2020, we launched Project Matriarchs as a service that matched college students with working families to provide virtual academic support and childcare on a free/sliding scale basis. We later developed our Pledge to Care, which aims to frame care as a key social issue for Gen Z, interconnected with other social issues like gender equity and racial justice that our generation has put its collective energy behind, with the ultimate goal of actualizing a future in which caregivers are genuinely respected and cared for in the United States.
