About Phoebe Barnard

I\'m a global change and climate scientist, systems and policy analyst, conservation biologist, environmental and societal futurist, sustainability risk and resilience strategist, climate bioadaptation science-policy analyst, writer, editor, mentor, professor and film co-producer - interested in finding collaborative spatial planning and human behavior solutions to potentially high-conflict wicked problems. I\'m an inveterate team-builder to accelerate and deepen science-policy impact. Co-founder and outgoing CEO of the Stable Planet Alliance, a coalition of like-minded scientific, technical, health, education, women\'s empowerment and grassroots organizations collaborating to bend the needle on our human numbers, appetites, and mindsets, and co-founder and co-designer of the Global Restoration Collaborative, a bold network of networks to accelerate, align, upskill and upscale ecosystem restoration, climate restoration, and the collaborative leadership and intergenerational mentorship of women, youth and indigenous cultural bridges. I have 36 years of deep and broad experience across southern and eastern Africa, Europe and North America - especially Namibia and South Africa with founding and leading climate change and biodiversity programs, university teaching, mentoring young professionals, and founding and leading research initiatives and organizations. In 2017 I returned to the USA to work on risk and resilience, early warning systems, green economic recovery, climate migration and displacement, managed coastal retreat planning, episodic events, and human behavior change. I\'m also Affiliate Full Professor at University of Washington (Center for Environmental Politics and School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences), and Research Associate at the University of Cape Town (African Climate and Development Initiative and the Fitzpatrick Institute of African Ornithology). Contact me at p•••••••@uw.edu or p••••••••@stableplanetalliance.org. When not working, I climb mountains and volcanoes, run in the forests, develop a community victory garden and firewise community practices, and go adventuring with my groovy husband, filmmaker John Bowey, our puppies and family when they are visiting.
