About Phillip Battle
Sergeant Battle’s PlaneTo some Airmen, I became a crew chief too early. Especially to some of those who out-ranked me. The back story goes like this. As an E-4, Senior Airmen, I was already proficient in my trade. My job was to maintain one of the “Heavies” at Norton AFB. In short, I oversaw the repair and reclamation of the military C-141 airlift bombardment aircraft.Early in my career, one of my ranking officers (SMSgt Sapolsky) gave me charge of one of the shops that was responsible for inspecting, diagnosing trouble and determining remedy where overall knowledge of all systems of aircraft was required. In doing so, it angered many of the other ranking sergeants that would have worked for me.As a result,\"Many\" or should I say \"Most\" of them gave me a hard time. In a word, “Mutiny.” They were not going to work for me! For this reason, we took our concerns to the Deputy Commander of Maintenance DCM. After hearing it, I was promoted to Sergeant and at a young age of 25 was given my own shop.As for the other military personnel who would not take orders from a buck sergeant, they were removed. During that time, I became the ranking Non-Commissioned Officer NCO. The officer’s that were removed was immediately replaced by civilians of the same ability and skill set. Together, we maintained the workload planning and achieved accommodations in the timely recovery of the C-141B aircraft that is illustrated in the picture.Hence, Sergeant Battle’s Plane. My career accomplishments include the following:• Improve organizational effectiveness and efficiency through process improvement methods.• Research best practices for improvement ideas with industry experience to ensure efficient and effective implementation of change.• Develop and implement continuous improvement strategies by gathering and analyzing data to efficiently identify strategies for improvement which maximizes operational efficiencies.
