I am responsible for the strategic planning, development, delivery and evaluation of the UCL IOE Confucius Institute for Schools’ CPD programme for Mandarin teachers in the UK. This comprehensive programme caters for teachers at all levels, from pre-service to in-service training, total language beginner to native speakers, increasing access to Mandarin Chinese and Chinese culture for teachers. Support includes language support, teaching for examinations and assessment, and language teaching pedagogy as well as other development and training opportunities.Project management of teacher training has seen me successfully design and implement systems of market research, needs analysis and evaluation, all of which feeds into developing courses and materials for teachers. Additionally, I have engaged with the UCL Moodle system, ensuring teacher training is accessible online as well as face to face. I have helped design and develop an online beginner’s course in Chinese, with experts at UCL IOE, launched in 2014. Since then, over 200 teachers have accessed this free resource, supported by online classrooms, forum discussions and face to face training. I have broadened UCL IOE CI’s marketing channels, making information about teacher training well known throughout the teaching community, particularly through more focused use of social media and multiple online networks and resources. I recently created a website for the Mandarin Excellence Programme (MEP) which I am helping deliver for UCL IOE, on behalf of the DfE.Previously Academic Director for a group of junior centres, I handled academic recruitment, training and management of 120 staff. Prior to that I worked as a teacher trainer on a Malaysian Ministry of Education development project, delivered by the British Council. I have over ten years’ language teaching experience, including six years in China where I studied Mandarin at Beijing Culture and Language University.
