ABOUT PHILIP GOSS
I am an audit and risk professional with over 25 years experience in the insurance industry. I measure my success in two ways. The first is by how well I collaborate with colleagues to find innovative, pragmatic solutions to risk and regulatory issues that allow the business to achieve its goals and secondly, through the support of individuals in the successful development of their career. It is important to me that work is a fun and enjoyable place to be, where individuals can grow, and I have created this culture in all the teams I have managed. The first half of my career was in internal audit where I developed my technical knowledge regarding the management of risk as well as learning about all areas of general insurance, life insurance and pension sales and administration across global markets, including Lloyds. I learned very early into my internal audit career that working collaboratively with the business, demonstrating empathy, and being realistic was the key to a successful audit and for driving positive change. My move into the second line was driven by a desire to be more actively involved in the day to day management of a business and to be a member of an Executive team, accountable for overall business performance. In this time I have covered numerous disciplines including compliance advice and monitoring, operational risk management including solvency II, independent internal assurance, business continuity, financial crime, AML and data protection. I am a passionate believer that risk and compliance teams, whilst needing to provide robust challenge, should be willing to back their judgement and give strong advice and direction. We should not be afraid to make decisions as after all we are the experts in our fields. I take pride in having transformed the culture of my risk and compliance teams to be no longer considered the “policeman” but one that supports the delivery of the company’s strategy.
