The Institute for Integrative and Innovative Research (I³R) is bringing together thought leaders and change-makers to create innovative solutions to wicked problems. The grand challenges of today – protecting human health; understanding the food, energy, water nexus; exploring the universe at all scales – will not be solved by one discipline alone. They require convergence: the merging of ideas, approaches and technologies from widely diverse fields of knowledge to stimulate innovation and discovery. I³R will grow convergence research and foster collaboration to address the Grand Challenges. The initial Grand Challenge I³R will undertake is Metabolic Health.Good metabolic health is about promoting healthy living, sustaining a healthy lifestyle and restoring health and function. Focusing on and ensuring metabolic health in Arkansas will have a positive impact that is not only felt here at home but will grow from the center out – across the state, to our nation, and beyond. We will do this through research advances in food science and nutrition, understanding the neural basis of behavior, studying the bioscience of metabolism from the micro (cellular) to the macro (whole-body) levels, including how physical activity, and built-environments that promote physical activities, can improve metabolism, neural control, and mental-health.
