Experience

  1. Director of Judicial Accountability

    Center For Community Alternatives

Dec 2021 — Present · New York, NY, US

Founded and direct advocacy project that pushes state courts to better serve all citizens and seeks to hold courts and judges accountable to the people they serve. Advocate and organize for more progressive and professionally diverse judges through a range of creative strategies and interventions, including public communications and media campaigns, direct political advocacy, and political and community organizing—Have led three campaigns around vacancies on the New York Court of Appeals, including the Stop Singas campaign in summer 2021, the UnCuomo the Court campaign in fall 2021, and The Court New York Deserves campaign from July 2022 to April 2023. The last campaign made history by compelling the State Senate to reject a governor’s nominee to the Court of Appeals for the first time, and ultimately won its central goals with the nomination and confirmation of current Chief Judge Rowan Wilson—Have led two campaigns focusing attention on individual trial court judges up for reappointment, one in 2024 and one in 2025. Won both campaigns, compelling the judges to retire early under political pressure—Created the Judicial Pipeline Program, the first program in New York that recruits and trains progressive and public interest lawyers to pursue state court judgeships. Have led one 20-participant cohort so far—Created and co-lead the State Courts Organizing Network, which brings together advocates around the country who are organizing around state courts. Have hosted many virtual meetings and two in-person convenings, each bringing over 65 people from over 15 states to New York.
