About Peter Soles

Peter is a business development leader with over 25 years of marine industry experience, including several years as an ASD tug operator and in ship operations management as a Port Captain. His background includes hands-on navigation and marine operations in remote and infrastructure-limited regions of the Pacific, bringing well-developed field judgment and a practical, operations-first approach to marine projects.Peter offers a unique blend of operational experience and academic training in support of marine transportation and vessel design efforts. He holds a Master’s degree in Marine Transportation Management and Policy and a certificate in Global Trade, Transportation and Logistics from the University of Washington Foster School of Business. He also holds a USCG Merchant Mariner Credential with endorsements as Master 1600 GRT ITC Tons) and Master of Towing Vessels, Near Coastal.His areas of expertise include marine operations and logistics planning; remote-area navigation and ship handling; tug and barge operations; and break-bulk and project cargo handling, stowage, and sea-fastening. He has extensive knowledge of Arctic maritime activity and has authored multiple whitepapers on Arctic shipping policy and the environment.At Glosten, Peter has contributed to a range of large-scale industry projects, including challenging marine operations and logistics projects in the Panama Canal Zone, Sakhalin Island, the western and central Pacific Ocean, and Alaska—often involving limited shoreside infrastructure, challenging weather patterns, and long-range operational planning. Peter also leads the development of Glosten’s Harbor, Multi-Purpose, General Towing, and Ship Assist series tug concepts.Prior to joining Glosten, Peter oversaw and managed a fleet of handymax ships operating on international service routes, where he planned and executed numerous complex marine transportation projects. He also sailed for several years as Captain and First Mate on harbor assist and coastal line-haul tugs in Puget Sound, British Columbia, and Alaska, performing coastal and harbor towing operations, ship handling, and tactical barge shifting and maneuvering. His responsibilities included full vessel management, crew supervision and training, and routine maintenance of major machinery.Peter also has several years of experience in passenger vessel operations, including a long-term captain assignment in a remote area of the central Pacific Ocean, where he was responsible for navigation, voyage planning, and operational decision-making far from external support.
