ABOUT PETER SMULOWITZ

I am primarily dedicated to helping continue the efforts at UMass Memorial Health - Milford Regional Medical Center to deliver high quality health care to its community. My passion is to promote a culture of safety and continuous innovation in health care. My primary goals as CMO are to take care of our community of both patients and clinicians. Taking care of the caregivers means they can deliver better care to patients. I am passionate about motivating leaders, driving change, and sparking innovation and continuous improvement. As of 2025 I’ve taken on the “CQO”and organizational excellence portfolio at Milford, an exciting new adventure which should further advance our work towards excellence in quality, safety, and process improvement. In addition to my administrative and clinical work, my academic interests include:\"The Illusion of Perfection\" in medicine; the role of Communication, Apology and Resolution programs; and the significance and root causes of variation in decision-making. I\'m proud along with my mentor and research team to have received RO1 funding from AHRQ to investigate the predictors of variation in admission rates for Medicare patients and the role of risk tolerance in explaining variation in admissions.I speak regularly both locally and nationwide on topics related to perfection in medicine, establishing a Just Culture as an expected norm, CARe programs, and the power of apology.
