ABOUT PETER BURGESS ENGD

I\'m a PV performance monitoring and solar irradiation expert. At Solarcentury I was responsible for developing and running high resolution analysis of over 400MW of utility solar assets (string and inverter level). Key objectives: identifying underperformance, cost-benefit analysis of underperformance and interventions, root causes, and working with field services teams to optimize system performance. Notable successes: linked site spatial data to site performance data, separated weather effects from fundamental issues, and identified key performance issues including ground faults, control system defects, and potential-induced degradation. For my industrial doctorate I worked with both SSE (the UK\'s largest vertically-integrated utility) and Solarcentury on- Implementing monitoring on a UK-wide PV fleet - Developing a robust method of estimating in-plane irradiance interpolating data from ground-based measurements - Deep spatial and temporal analysis of (a) the performance of commercially available long-term irradiance datasets and (b) statistical analysis of the year-to-year variation in irradiance across the UK. My EngD work continues to inform contract development with major commercial clients at Solarcentury, provides irradiance data for performance ratio calculations on £1M-plus solar projects, and benefits SSE facilities managers. My strong sustainable energy background includes an MSc in environmental technology with energy policy, and two years as a sustainable energy consultant working on both policy and implementation of sustainable energy for public and private (SME) clients.Beyond solar, my particular sustainable energy passions are demand side management, grid integration of renewables, clean transport and active travel.Specialties: Photovoltaics, Energy monitoring, Data management, Optimization, Sustainable Energy, time series, benchmarking
