ABOUT PETER BRANNEY
I’ve always believed that people do their best work when they feel they genuinely belong. That belief has shaped my career as a researcher, educator and now as Head of Psychology and Associate Professor at the University of Bradford. My research has taken me from qualitative explorations of patient experience to national policy work and open science — but the thread running through all of it is a commitment to understanding people’s lived realities and improving them. Whether working with patients, colleagues or students, I’ve always been motivated by the same question: how do we create environments where people can thrive? In leading the Department of Psychology, that question guides my everyday decisions. I aim to build structures and cultures that help colleagues feel confident, supported and valued — because strong teams don’t happen by accident; they grow from psychological safety, shared purpose and the small, consistent acts that make people feel seen.Bradford’s ethos — “Different is what we do” — resonates deeply with me. It reflects not only who our students and colleagues are, but what we aspire to be together: a community where inclusion is lived, belonging is felt and difference is genuinely valued. My leadership is about turning that ethos into an everyday experience, in classrooms, meetings and the wider life of the Department.I continue to supervise doctoral researchers and collaborate on work that pushes forward qualitative methods, men’s health research and the development of open and inclusive research cultures. Research, teaching and leadership are deeply interconnected for me — all part of building an academic environment where people can make meaningful contributions. If you’re interested in inclusive leadership, values‑led research, or the future of higher‑education culture and strategy, I’d love to connect and share ideas.
