About Peter Bonilla
I\'ve spent more than 17 years in the nonprofit civil liberties world, with a particular focus on higher education. Most of that time was spent at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), where I worked over the years in a variety capacities. My work there various included overseeing FIRE\'s case management and leading its team of advocates working to defend student and faculty rights against censorship and retaliation; managing the implementation of a multimillion dollar grant from the John Templeton Foundation; and managing FIRE\'s faculty programming and development. Since fall 2022 I have been Executive Director of a new nonprofit, the MIT Free Speech Alliance. I was hired as MFSA\'s first salaried employee, and my daily work puts me at the intersection of all the major arteries of nonprofit work-administration, communications, outreach, fundraising, event planning, and more, with the help of a committed board and active team of volunteers.Since 2020 I have lived in the Boston area, after a nearly 20-year spell in Philadelphia.
Experience
Executive Director
Nov 2022 — Present · Cambridge, MA, US
In November 2022 I joined the MIT Free Speech Alliance as its Executive Director and first employee. MFSA, which is independent of MIT, was founded by a group of volunteer alumni to push for better free speech protections, and a better free speech climate overall at the institution, through events, outreach, and other community programming. MFSA will also be an observer of broader trends in free expression affecting campuses nationwide, and hopes to provide a blueprint to other similar alumni organizations looking to make similar impacts. MFSA’s early work is supported by a grant from the Stanton Foundation.
