ABOUT PETE HAUG

Pete serves as manager for Ayres Associates’ water resources group with a primary focus on dam inspection, hydraulic structure design, and spillway construction observation. Pete joined Ayres Associates in 2010 after serving more than a decade at the University of Iowa’s Institute of Hydraulic Research (now IIHR Hydroscience & Engineering).Pete has inspected hundreds of river structures, including FERC dams, state dams, scour critical bridge piers, and coolant water intakes overseen by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. His peer-reviewed papers include spillway discharge uncertainty, dam removal, spillway performance, and other hydraulic topics. He is an instructor for Federal Highway Administration Highway classes (Highway Hydraulics, Culvert Design) and has presented university seminars on spillway hydraulics.From a career started by modifying Columbia and Snake River dams for improved fish passage to a present focus on rehabilitating Midwestern dams for structural and hydraulic sufficiency, Pete has been widely exposed to geotechnical, hydraulic, structural, and regulatory challenges. He has been the engineer of record for the $7 million new Byllesby dam spillway, the $16 million Byllesby powerhouse replacement, the $2 million Minong Dam stepped spillway, and the $1M Grimh/Gordon Dam removal projects. Pete is an avid hydro surveyor and a proponent of advanced dam monitoring practices for scour holes, dam movement, and other stability failure modes.
