About Perisa Ashar
Hello! I\'m Perisa, a Masters Student in Biomedical Engineering student on the Device Design Fellowship track at Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering. My background spans a range of biomedical engineering projects, wearables, medical device design, computational biology, and public health research through the Robertson Scholars Leadership Program. I’m passionate about advancing biomedical technology, medicine, and ensuring equitable access to these innovations in society. As part of the Device Design and Imaging Track in BME, I am committed to developing medical innovations that positively impact human lives. I have worked as R&D Electrical Engineering Intern at Medtronic in summer of 2024, and R&D software Engineering in Summer 2025. During Fall 2024, I completed an Electrical and Software Engineering internship at Gilero, a medical device company in NC. I am now an incoming R&D Software Engineering intern at Medtronic for Summer 2026.Through my various research experiences, projects, and education at the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University, I have developed engineering, research, device design, project-based skills, and expertise in bioinformatics, software (MATLAB, Python, C++), and statistical analytics. At the Duke BME Big IDEAS Lab, I’ve led impactful projects, including using EEG and machine learning to predict outcomes in comatose patients, resulting in a co-authored paper presented at the 2023 Computing in Cardiology Conference. I also contributed to studies on demographic reporting in bio-signal data, published in Lancet Digital Health and presented at the 2024 Biomedical Engineering Society Annual Meeting, as well as research on digital health data sharing, published in Nature npj Digital Medicine.Previously, I also presented my research on identifying heart failure biomarkers at the 2023 American College of Cardiology Conference. I am also an American Heart Association (AHA) EmPOWERed Scholar, and will be presenting the results of educational interventions on reducing systolic and diastolic blood pressure at the upcoming 2024 AHA Scientific Sessions Conference. As the founder of STEMinate and a Bass Connections Research Fellow, I have honed my leadership skills and collaborated in interdisciplinary projects. My nonprofit, STEMinate, furthers my dedication to service by providing educational opportunities for underprivileged students worldwide.

Svati Shah Lab at Duke Biomedical Data Science & Biostatistics Researcher
Duke University Pratt School Of Engineering
Jan 2024 — Present
Investigated associations between circulating biomarkers and epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) volume and EAT density to improve cardiovascular risk prediction and stratification. • Utilized data from the Prospective Multicenter Imaging Study for Evaluation of Chest Pain (PROMISE) trial and applied univariate and multivariate regression models in RStudio to quantify the relationships between biomarkers and EAT characteristics. Examined the associations between EAT-related biomarkers and high-risk coronary phenotypes (HRCP), including obstructive coronary artery disease, high coronary artery calcium burden, and high-risk plaque features. • Abstract accepted for presentation at the 2025 American Heart Association Epidemiology and Cardiometabolic Health Scientific Sessions Conference and accepted for publication in the Circulation journal • Authored senior thesis on EAT-biomarker associations and awarded “Graduation with Distinction in Biology” by Duke University
