About Bryan Schlake
While my real passion and life career is the grand adventure of following a carpenter from Nazareth, my business card currently reads \"Assistant Teaching Professor in Rail Transportation Engineering\" at Penn State University. I am originally from Naperville, IL, a suburb of Chicago and was fortunate enough to earn both a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. At Illinois, I conducted research with the Rail Transportation and Engineering Center (RailTEC) focused on the safety and economic benefits of freight car condition monitoring technologies. Post graduation I worked for Norfolk Southern Railway, serving in both management and engineering roles. In 2014, I accepted a position with Penn State University to teach in their Rail Transportation Engineering (RTE) program. Penn State Altoona currently offers the nation\'s first and only Bachelor of Science in Rail Transportation Engineering. As part of the RTE faculty, I am involved with research related to rolling stock safety, locomotive energy efficiency, lean production, and applying emerging technologies to railroad operations. With a passion for mentoring and leadership development, I serve as an academic advisor for engineering students and advise the AREMA student chapter at Penn State Altoona. I also enjoy serving as Faculty Fellow for the Penn Eta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon in State College, PA. When I\'m not teaching, mentoring students, advising fraternity men, or working on research, you can usually find me playing a game of pickup basketball somewhere on campus or exploring a new hiking trail in the woods of central PA.
