About Matt Pearson
With more than twenty years in high-impact roles at leading tech companies, Matthew Pearson has been at the intersection of law and technology, advancing innovation and technological evolution while ensuring compliance in dynamic regulatory environments. As Assistant General Counsel for Microsoft’s Azure Hardware & Systems Innovation division, Matt oversaw legal matters for a $10B+ global supply chain ranked #4 on the Gartner Supply Chain Top 25. He built and led a high-performing team—delivering legal support to system engineering, component supply, contract manufacturing, and logistics for datacenter IT hardware—and helmed successful initiatives to enhance supply chain resilience and long-term diversification. Matt enables strategic decision-making by providing end-to-end counsel to engineering, supply chain, logistics, and operations teams on strategy for complex commercial deals and technology transactions. He partners with engineering to gain a deep working knowledge of highly technical subject matter, such as advanced chip design, and translates technical concepts into practical legal strategies to safeguard IP rights and mitigate risk while ensuring freedom to operate. When negotiating complex agreements with global partners and suppliers—from small enterprises to international governments and major multinational companies in highly regulated industries across Asia, the EU, and the Middle East—Matt structures contracts that not only reflect business objectives but also lay the groundwork for long-term collaborative relationships. Beyond building strong business relationships with global partners, Matt guides cross-functional teams on compliance with international and U.S. regulations, such as tariffs, federal procurement acquisition regulations, and import-export controls, conveying potential impact on business operations.Prior to Azure, Matt served in impactful roles in Datacenter Operations, Security & Compliance; Microsoft Open Technologies, Inc; Developer & Platform Evangelism; and Technical Computing, among other divisions.Until going in-house in 2002, Matt was an attorney at Am Law 100 firm Perkins Coie, where he represented Fortune 500 companies and well-known brands such as Amazon, AT & T Wireless, and Nintendo in corporate and technology transactions. In his civic engagement, Matt has worked as a pro bono attorney with the Seattle Clemency Project, volunteered as a coach for Ballard Youth Soccer Club, and served as a board member and board president for Seattle Public Theater.
