Manager of our family of real-time-focused programming teams in London, New York, and Hong Kong.Our primary responsibility is the \"real-time browser\" for Bloomberg\'s flagship product, the Bloomberg Professional Service, incorporating Instant Bloomberg (instant messaging), Launchpad and Bloomberg NEXT. My role has involved architecting the component framework that is used to display real-time price, news and analytic data and that allows the user to interact with this data, and conceiving and building products that utilise this infrastructure - Launchpad being my most satisfying achievement. My teams are responsible for enhancing this framework and making it available through software toolkits to application developers throughout the Engineering department at Bloomberg. We live and breathe high-performance C++ for data processing and visualization, with a TypeScript/JavaScript environment layered above to provide rapid prototyping and application development.I co-founded the now 1600-strong Engineering department in London. As well as working closely with the software infrastructure team in New York, Frankfurt and Hong Kong, I helped design and establish our Tech Hub in San Francisco.

ABOUT PAUL WILLIAMS
Paul co-founded the London Engineering Department at Bloomberg, and is part of the leadership team that has seen the local office grow to 1,600 developers over the last 27 years. He and his peers designed and built many core components of the Bloomberg Professional Service, including Launchpad, the multi-screen real-time financial data display, and Instant Bloomberg (\"IB\"), the finance industry\'s ubiquitous secure instant messaging system.He also works closely with the engineering teams in Bloomberg\'s New York office, co-founded Bloomberg\'s Tech Hub in San Francisco and has formed teams in Hong Kong and Frankfurt. Bloomberg is looking for great software engineers in all our major engineering hubs!Paul is involved with STEM and education initiatives in the UK, working with non-profits and educational establishments to help ensure that the next generation is excited about a future in technology. He founded his first STEM scholarship with the University of Leicester and Virgin Galactic, and is very actively involved with supporting education charities Big Change, Mission 44, Stemettes and The Benedetti Foundation. In total, he has raised over in the last 10 years.Paul started programming in the 1980s on the first personal computers, teaching himself Computer Studies and rapidly discovering that publishing articles in computer magazines was far more lucrative than a teenage paper round. After studying Electronic Engineering at Bath University and writing music sequencers for student union bar gigs, Paul flirted with the fledgling games industry in the 80s then worked for Caplin Cybernetics, a startup designing parallel compute accelerators for solving complex maths problems at high-speed in the fields of image processing, computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis. A focus on building fast, reliable, innovative systems led to opportunities to work with Bloomberg, where Paul has spent the rest of his career.Paul’s main experience is technical and team leadership, near-real-time systems design, high-performance software, C++ and Windows development, advocacy, recruitment, public speaking, and moving fast and not breaking things.
