Member of Drafting Panel for Bs30480 Suicide Prevention Standard @英国标准协会
An honour to serve as a member of the Drafting Panel ( & Committee) for the Standard for Suicide Prevention, BS30480.From the first moment I heard Marcus Long proposing an organisational Standard for Suicide Prevention, after losing his 21-year old son Adam to suicide, I gave this my full support.I attended the initial scoping workshop in Westminster in Feb 2024 and two follow-up forums which concluded this would be a valuable tool in our suicide prevention toolkit, and could apply to any organisation in any sector. The British Standards Institute (BSI) has given positive, professional support throughout. On the day we had the ZeroSuicideSociety JoinTheDotsTour Launch Conference in Scunthorpe on 12 Jun 2024, BSI agreed to move forward with the proposal to develop the Standard. Marcus was able to make this important announcement from the stage. In Sep 2024, an overarching Committee was established to guide the process, along with a Comms & Engagement Group to liaise with a wide range of stakeholders, and a Drafting Panel of \'professional experts\' and \'experts by lived experience\' to draft the Standard and consider comments.I\'m a member of the Drafting Panel, the Committee and the Comms & Engagement Group.It\'s been an intensive process of drafting, development, discussion, editing, etc.The draft Standard was published for public comment May to July. The Drafting Panel considered each and every comment received. The final Standard will be launched at Westminster on 19 Nov 2025.BS30480 is a good practice guide, summarising key issues and information, and key practical steps organisations can take to educate around suicides, support those affected, and prevent suicides. It has a specific focus on suicide -\"intervention, prevention, and support for people affected by suicide\". Still much to do in developing BS30480, and engaging organisations to encourage adoption or alignment; then a long-term process of learning from implementation. And then ISO!
