ABOUT PAUL SPURDENS

As VP of Employee Relations for the UK and EMEA within a global financial services organisation, I lead the strategic direction and delivery of employee relations across complex, highly regulated, multi-jurisdictional environments. With over 20 years’ experience spanning banking and financial services, I bring deep sector knowledge and regulatory insight to the management of high-risk and senior-level ER matters.I oversee grievances, disciplinary and performance cases, complex HR investigations, breaches of internal frameworks, and cross-border ER issues. I ensure alignment with SMCR (Senior Managers & Certification Regime) and conduct rules, embedding regulatory accountability and robust governance into day-to-day ER practice. My role requires sound judgement, discretion, and the ability to operate credibly at executive level while balancing legal, regulatory, and cultural considerations.I specialise in translating ER policies and procedures into practical, commercially sound management approaches. Partnering closely with senior leaders and HR teams, I drive consistency, embed best practice, and support organisational change initiatives across the UK and EMEA. I work in close collaboration with Legal, Compliance, and Risk functions to mitigate exposure, strengthen governance frameworks, and ensure defensible, fair, and proportionate outcomes.Alongside my corporate experience, I have developed a strong foundation in mediation and conflict resolution. I am a certified workplace mediator through the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS), with hands-on experience resolving complex interpersonal and organisational conflict. This enables me to move beyond process-driven solutions, facilitating constructive dialogue and sustainable resolution at all levels of the organisation.By combining strategic ER leadership, financial services regulatory expertise, and mediation capability, I proactively identify emerging risks, enhance conduct standards, and strengthen organisational culture. I am particularly focused on senior-level employee relations, SMCR and conduct compliance, policy implementation, and global conflict management. My approach is grounded in fairness, integrity, and commercial awareness. I am committed to building high-performing, inclusive, and resilient workplaces where governance is strong, leaders are supported, and employees are treated consistently and equitably across the UK, EMEA, and beyond.
