About Pauline Arrillaga

I am a writer, editor, trainer, coach and professor of practice in journalism. I’m passionate about my students; diversity, equity and inclusion; and telling stories about people, places and issues too often overlooked. As a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation professor of practice, I lead a team of Cronkite students who provide in-depth health care news coverage about underserved communities and communities of color. Before that, I spent 27 years at The Associated Press, most recently as the head of enterprise journalism in the United States. I helped shape and lead the AP’s coverage examining the effects of President Donald Trump’s immigration policies on children and families. That work was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in national reporting and was a winner of an RFK Journalism Award and also the John Seigenthaler Prize for Courage in Reporting. I oversaw the AP’s series on missing and murdered Native American women, winner of the Dori J. Maynard Award for Justice in Journalism, the Les Payne Award for Coverage on Communities of Color, and other honors. As a writer, I blend deep reporting with narrative storytelling, and my work has won numerous accolades, including a 2005 Livingston Award for “Doors to Death,” a series examining human smuggling across the U.S-Mexico border.
