ABOUT PAUL HAWKSWORTH

It’s often stated in sport, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”. If you played or participated in competitive sport you probably heard this. Personally, this quote made me wonder what could be accomplished if talent met hard work. Since, I used extensive education in Psychology and Business and a natural curiosity to, research, identify and solve problems; to identify, recruit, and manage talent; and to motivate/engage others one on one or through group presentations/dialogue. My career has primarily been focused in sport. I have spent considerable time in the trenches, working directly with athletes and volunteers to set and accomplish big goals. I have challenged others to think analytically and act strategically. Recently, I was responsible for delivering innovative programs to recruit youth to rowing, and previously Canadian domestic and high performance programs in para-rowing. In each case, I learned about barriers to participation in rowing and other sports, and I used this information to strategically position programs and recruit. This included strategic partnerships to better identify talented athletes; and the development of a new tool to guide, monitor, and evaluate volunteer based clubs. These led to increases in participation year over year, and led to international success including World Championship Bronze and Paralympic Bronze. Over time, I identified a passion for setting and pursuing ambitious/stretch goals, and for helping people/organizations find success in their pursuit. I believe ‘stretching’, along with support/training from managers/coaches, allows everyone involved to achieve more than they would have otherwise. I’m confident this is why my list of accomplishments includes many ‘firsts’. Finally, I’ve been described as being ‘genuine’, and I wear this with pride. I follow the golden rule and treat everyone as I would like to be treated…with honesty, and integrity. I generally enjoy connecting and sharing.
