The Signal I Was Always Moving TowardAt 18, I walked into one of Canada’s premier cardiovascular research centers — the James Hogg Centre for Heart Lung Innovation at St. Paul’s Hospital — and began studying the biophysical chemistry of lipids in the atherosclerosis lab at UBC.That wasn’t the beginning of a career. It was the beginning of an obsession.I watched heart failure dismantle people quietly — stealing their energy, their independence, their ability to simply keep up with living. That image never left me. Not when I stepped away from academia. Not when I spent over a decade mastering financial markets as an analyst and options trader — learning how systems move, where signals hide, how to see what others miss before the world catches up.When Northwestern called, I came back to the science. Not as a student returning to familiar ground — but as someone who had spent years learning to read complex systems under pressure, with real consequences.Four months ago, I found it.Circulating microRNAs during cardiac rejection — a molecular fingerprint sitting in plain sight, invisible only because no one had built the right lens to see it. I saw it. I understood immediately what the convergence of metagenomic sequencing, machine learning, and large-scale genomic datasets could do in the right hands.So I built it.HeartMend is a point-of-care molecular diagnostic that detects pediatric acute cardiac rejection in real time. The current classifier runs at 92.9% accuracy. A bioinformatics manuscript is under editorial review. Collaboration with University Health Network is active and advancing.This is not a pivot. This is not a trend I caught. This is the destination of a journey that started when I was 18 years old and first understood what a failing heart costs a human being.I don’t abandon problems. I don’t abandon people. And I don’t let a vision die because the timeline is long or the path is hard.Genetic medicine will define the next century of clinical care.HeartMend is the first step.And I intend to see every step after it
