About Paul Hart
Been involved in software development for over 20 years, having worked at a variety of companies including Amazon, the Bell System, Lowe’s Home Improvement and various start-ups. Recently, I have primarily focused on Automation (including Infrastructure), CI/CD and Dev Ops. This has included working with and developing with tools like Vagrant, Terraform, Jenkins, Ansible/Ansible Tower, Docker, and vSphere framework. I enjoy coding and regularly find myself using languages like Python. My depth and breadth of experience means I have both a big picture view and of potentials solutions, as well as tactical technical experience solving challenges a company and/or software development team is facing. Every day I find myself having discussions with senior management (technical and business) and then turning around to do a code inspection or writing some code myself. I have also worked on all sorts of applications including large back end servers (Amazon WishList or Ad Delivery for CNET), Web extensions, Automation tools, and Web Sites.
Experience
Lead Software Engineer
Jul 2020 — Present · Charlotte, NC, US
Throughout my career at Lowes, I have been a technology influencer, helping teams adopt and adapt to the rapid changes in the technology and processes. I started at Lowes as a Development manager on a team that eventually established itself as a DevOps/Agile center of excellence, but decided to transition into an IC role. In recognition of our results, I was offered the lead technologist role on a VP initiative to facilitate the Agile/Devops transition for the entire company. This resulted in a promotion to Lead Software Engineer and eventually joined the Enterprise Architecture Team working on the GKE/GCE framework team. This team builds the technology to build and support the infrastructure and automation for all GKE k8s clusters, GCE VMs along with creating and managing the CI/CD tooling for these environments. Key Projects and Impact:Currently leading the analysis, requirements and design for replacing our aged implementation of Hashicorp’s Consul. We need to modernize and centralize our approach to finding and managing services, as we now have thousands of services and even more clients which are widely distributed across various clusters and platforms. A major cornerstone of our new approach is to ensure our customers (developers) focus on developing business code and not worry about how to wire their code into our Hybrid Cloud environment. Lead Engineer working on major overhaul of the Pipeline’s responsible for building and deploying our GKE k8s clusters. The result includes being able to reliably build a large variety of fully tested clusters in minutes vs. days. This was accomplished through strategic technical debt reduction, adoption of cluster automated testing framework and focusing on a configuration driven approach (separating code and configuration). We currently use spinnaker for customer application deployment but are currently researching alternatives including ArgoCD.
