Mobilizing Myanmar, a 2017 research report commissioned by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, explores the momentous transformation underway in a once-isolated country where cell towers sprouted faster than bamboo. As primary writer, editor, and photographer, I conducted ethnographic research in rural and urban areas, interviewing more than 150 people about mobile phone usage, financial lives, challenges, and hopes. Our country-level diagnostic also leveraged data from the Central Bank, Ministry of Communications, telecom companies, Facebook, Viber, UNFPA census and survey of 7,500 households.
