ABOUT PAUL MCLAVIN
As a veteran of the food and drink packaging industry I have managed operations in the good times and the bad. Working in a range of functions including; Marketing, Sales, New Product Development, Business planning and Quality Improvement, I have developed an in depth understanding of the industry and its dynamics. I have helped drive environmental improvements through packaging reductions, light-weighting and improved recycling rates, while maintaining the core functions of packaging; to protect the product and promote it to the consumer. I represent O-I within the industry forum, British Glass, where I am a Director, a member of the Communications Group and Chair of the Recycling Committee. Through BG I have been represented the industry to Government to inform decision making. Through networking I have been able to promote glass packaging in various forums: • For 15 years I presented annual lectures on glass packaging to the MSc Brewing and Distilling students at Heriot Watt University. • I have presented twice at UK Spirits Packaging Summit regarding innovations and trends in the glass packaging industry. • In 2016 I presented O-I\'s leadership in furnace technology for beer packaging production to the British Bottlers Institute Conference. • In 2007 I worked with Adnams to develop a new generation of lightweight ale bottles, winning a 2 Starpack awards and generating the opportunity to present the project at beer and packaging venues across Europe. We built on this success in 2014, with further developments. Relationships have also been key in working with customers to develop new opportunities or repair failing ones and then build an environment of co-operation and mutual understanding to create value for the long term. As well as a Business Studies degree, I have diplomas in Marketing (MCIM) and Packaging Technology (IOP). I am also a member of the Institute of Brewers and Distillers, and the Chartered Institute of Marketing. I have an extremely detailed knowledge of the UK glass packaging market, including; production, filling and recycling, and an understanding of the food and beverage packaging market in general, which I have used to identify trends and execute initiatives to take advantage of emerging opportunities. I am a Liveryman within the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers; an organization committed to promoting glass within society and carrying out charitable works in education. I am an enthusiastic cook and am enjoying experimenting with hydroponics to grow sustainable plants for the kitchen.
