ABOUT PAUL MCCAGUE

I am Director of Education (Pharmacy) and a Reader (Education) at the School of Pharmacy, Queen’s University Belfast (QUB).I graduated with a Master of Pharmacy from QUB and following pre-registration training returned to the School of Pharmacy in Belfast to complete a PhD in clinical pharmacy. Following my PhD, I held lectureships at the School of Pharmacy University College Cork (2012-14) and Liverpool John Moores University (2014-15). My role in University College Cork was a joint appointment with the Mercy University Hospital, where I worked as a clinical paediatric pharmacist. I returned to QUB in September 2015 to take up a Lecturer (Education) position. I was promoted to Senior Lecturer (Education) in 2019, and to Reader (Education) in 2022.I have played a key role in transforming the pharmacy curriculum in line with latest GPhC standards, enabling pharmacists to qualify as prescribers upon registration. As School Lead for Interprofessional Learning, I foster collaboration between pharmacy and other healthcare disciplines, driving innovative teaching approaches that enhance teamwork, communication and clinical decision-making. I have also made sustained contributions to student support, helping to ensure students receive timely and compassionate academic and wellbeing support throughout their studies.My scholarship focuses on interprofessional learning and novel teaching approaches in pharmacy education. I collaborate with the Irish Pharmacy Union to develop and deliver peer-reviewed training for pharmacists, translating clinical research into practical guidance to enhance patient care through evidence-based practice changes. I am an external examiner for three Schools of Pharmacy and a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland’s MPharm accreditation panel. My work is widely shared through publications, conferences, and professional networks.I have worked in both community and hospital pharmacy settings over the past sixteen years. I am a registrant of the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland, a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, and hold a Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
