ABOUT PAUL MAYNARD
Special Counsel at Covington and Burling. I advise technology companies on how to comply with the ever-expanding raft of obligations that apply to them. In particular, I:(a) help clients to gain value from data they collect from their services in a manner that complies with data protection and privacy laws (in particular for the purposes of online advertising, personalizing content on their sites, and fraud prevention);(b) advise on compliance with existing and new cybersecurity laws (e.g, NIS2, the Cyber Resilience Act, and DORA);(c) assist clients in dealing with cyber incidents;(d) help them on interactions with regulators in the context of normal supervision and investigations, and (e) assist with complex issues around cross-border law enforcement access to data, including on compliance with communications interception legislation and on cross-border transfer concerns. I have advised on the GDPR since well before it came into effect, and have a deep understanding of other EU and UK privacy and cybersecurity legislation, including the e-Privacy Directive (and the UK PECR), NIS2, and the Cyber Resilience Act, and I help clients understand the intersection of these rules with other tech-focused legislation, including the DSA and the DMA. I regularly advise on the UK Investigatory Powers Act, and have worked with clients throughout the legislative process for the forthcoming EU e-evidence package.
