About Paul Gerrish

Vice President of Technology, Advanced Product Development, and Medtronic Fellow at the Medtronic Tempe Campus for microelectronics.Paul has served as site technology leader since January 2008, responsible for technology development, internal business development, sensor process development, design environments and automation functions. He leads a diverse staff of 80+ personnel focused on the development and implementation of next generation ultra-low power IC, sensor, and electronic packaging technologies targeting system solutions with differentiating size reduction, new capabilities, and high reliability. These technologies helped enable the miniaturization achieved in the released Cardiac Micra, LINQ & LINQ II products with future applications being developed that range from chronic implantables to acute wearables and disposables. Since 2015, the organization has had active developments with customers across Cardiac, Neuroscience, Diabetes, and Surgical Portfolios of Medtronic.Paul has been with Medtronic in Tempe for over 34 years, serving in a variety of engineering roles in product, IC design, semiconductor device, and technology development where he made significant contributions to all IC fabrication processes developed over that time, including serving as the primary liaison between Medtronic’s IC design community to both internal and external foundries for more than a decade. With the closure of the Medtronic wafer fab in Tempe for making integrated circuits, Paul was instrumental in identifying and making the case to leverage the existing toolset to enable sensors and advanced packaging for electronic systems, that are being developed as a differentiator for Medtronic in the future. In 2004, Paul was recognized for his technical contributions to the corporation in developing reliable, ultra -low power IC processes and design environments as a Technical Fellow, and in 2005 with his induction into the Bakken Society. In 2013 he was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and in 2014 served as chairman of the Bakken Society. He received the 2015 CRHF Technical Leader of Excellence award for his role in helping others develop. In 2020, he was promoted to the newly created Vice President and Medtronic Fellow role. He holds 18 issued US patents with additional pending. Paul holds a BSEE in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Mexico, and an MSE degree in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University, with an emphasis in solid state physics.
