I’ve always loved selling. Not just products, but possibilities. I’m wired to see a goal, build a win-win, and create outcomes that leave everyone better off. My customer, their customer, and the organization I represent. Two stories that still make me smile: Sitting across from the Buyer and VP of Sales at a major photo specialty chain, I presented a $1M PO and sell-through plan. The Buyer said to his VP, “Olympus has never asked us for that much.” I smiled in reply: “That’s because Olympus didn’t send me to ask.” We got the PO and they got the sell-through. And the VP (retired) and I stay in touch to this day. When business with a national drugstore chain stalled below $500K, I asked for a meeting with the Director, who said, “You’re a small fish in my big pond.” I replied, “Funny. You’re a small fish in mine. Let’s be big fish in each other’s ponds.” After picking my buyer up off the floor, that account grew to over $7M and we won back-to-back-to-back category awards. My approach is simple: creativity, honesty, integrity. A combination that builds trust and drives growth. Now, as Executive Director of Fundraising for a national non-profit with a global presence, I’ve realized something ironic: I don’t actually like asking people for things. But I do love inviting them into something bigger than themselves. Selling “stuff” is hard. But being passionate about something and inviting people to come alongside a vision for a mission that transforms lives? That’s natural. Just like selling is. So, after one year of learning at Focus and two years of steady revenue growth, the future looks bright. And I get to do it all with an amazing and supportive wife, a wonderful family, and a faith that keeps me grounded and grateful.
