ABOUT PAUL DENNIS

I lead Deloitte\'s UK Tax Controversy team, a network of over 70 people incorporating ex-senior revenue authority officers, tax lawyers, mediators and specialists in the areas of tax that receive most focus from HMRC including transfer pricing, unallowable purpose and R&D. The Deloitte Tax Controversy team brings together our collective expertise with leading technology and insight from working with HMRC to resolve many complex disputes. We help clients with a range of dispute resolution techniques and through processes such as Alternative Dispute Resolution, the High Risk Corporates Programme, and without prejudice settlement negotiations to resolve disputes. Where not possible to reach a negotiated settlement, our team of lawyers can work clients through the tax litigation process and Judicial Reviews. I bring over 25 years of experience in manging tax disputes. Having started my career at HMRC and subsequently in the big 4 I have worked numerous complex disputes through to a conclusion. My usual approach is to use my mediation experience to foster a more open and collaborative engagement with HMRC. This approach not only accelerates the enquiry process to a decision point but also enables the parties to openly explore different settlement scenarios in a without prejudice environment. I have a long track record of resolving long running and complex tax disputes. In addition to individual disputes I help multinational companies to build their own tax controversy function - helping them on the journey to establishing better governance over all global audits, full visibility of the progress and risks with individual issues, utilising the best technology in tax controversy work, and accessing local expertise to help deliver the best strategy.
