ABOUT PAUL DAIGLE

Why am I a data scientist? Short story: I love math (especially probabilities) and automation, and I like to try new things. Long story: I started studying Physics Engineering at Polytechnique Montreal out of curiosity, as I like/need to understand how things work, especially the smallest blocks of our universe. However, I quickly understood that it was not made for me, career-wise. I needed something more business-oriented, but still very quantitative. Fortunately for me, I stumbled upon a recruitment poster for the Polytechnique Students\' Fund, PolyFinances, which I joined a few weeks later. PolyFinances holds a very special place in my heart, because it was a project that I was very passionate about, but also because it helped me define where I wanted to go and helped me grow as an individual. This is why taking the reins meant a lot for me, as I was able to pass on the same passion to others. Furthermore, during my two years there, I met some of the most inspiring individuals, one of whom became my director for my master\'s thesis later on. After my Bachelor, while at the CIRANO, I started to learn Python, and apply it to finance, developing our own Robo-Advisor. It is also there that I discovered what Machine Learning could do, and took my first steps in the field. After experiencing all the power of programming and statistics, I figured what I wanted my thesis to be on: Bayesian Networks in market finance. A few years later, I joined the Data Science team of Deloitte OMNIA AI. I was lucky enough to work with great mentors on various NLP projects. I also had the opportunity to, again, build something that I care a lot about, Deloitte Canada\'s NLP practice and its in-house NLP Accelerator. I am now applying my skills to build tools for socially responsible investing, using state-of-the-art NLP.
